Composed by award-winning composer Yuval Ron, the album unfolds as an integrated musical journey comprising of ten-movement Medicinal Plants Song Cycle alongside ten instrumental tracks, each inspired by a distinct herbal formula traditionally used for the relief of specific common clinical conditions. Utilizing the PlantWaveTM device, technology that translates the bioelectrical fluctuations of living plants into musical data, Ron has transformed these naturally occurring vibrations into musical pitch, rhythm, and form, shaping them into a cohesive and expressive musical language.

Every note and rhythmic gesture heard in this work originates from the plant bioelectrical signals! * These sonic materials were meticulously orchestrated according to the proportional “dosage” of each plant within the corresponding herbal formulas, allowing musical structure to mirror principles of balance, synergy, and well-being found in herbal medicine. Each and every track in this unique album pairs metaphorical imagery with a physiological process, inspired by plant medicine traditions and somatic listening practices.
The work features acclaimed vocal soloist Sharon Chohi Kim, whose artistry in contemporary opera and experimental vocal techniques brings vivid expression to the plants’ sonic essence. She is joined by an ensemble of distinguished musicians drawn from the Los Angeles Philharmonic and leading Hollywood film-music session orchestras, lending exceptional depth, precision, and color to the performance.

Originally commissioned by Dr. Richard Gold, The Secret Songs of Plants was conceived with the aspiration that listeners might receive the healing energies of medicinal plants through sound itself, experiencing, through musical vibration, the subtle healing qualities traditionally associated with these botanical species. Dr. Gold and Yuval Ron further envision this interspecies collaboration as a compelling work for the concert stage, as well as a powerful educational tool. Through performances, workshops, and lecture-demonstrations, The Secret Songs of Plants shall invite audiences, especially children, to discover the hidden life of plants, to understand that they are living beings imbued with constant, inaudible vibrations. In giving voice to these secret resonances, the work affirms that plants do, indeed, “sing,” and that their songs may now be heard, studied, and shared through this pioneering musical work.

*With the sole exception of the harmonic arrangement of “Moonlit Drift,” and “Whispers of Velvet: Stress Release” written by Yuval Ron.

LYRICS

1. Gravity and Grace: Liver Tonic
Based on sounds collected from 5 medicinal plants found in liver herbal formula
Lyrics by Porter Smith

Overcome, eye of the storm,
Over to my side come thee
My sanctuary mountain to climb and summit
Not for the air, but beholding peace, in the place once overcome
If to see, then to be calm,
Calm as if a window were the eye that overcomes every sight
Its sash of a pane clearer than the very wind known well to blow wide eye shut
Calm eye, come over me
See me through; through me but see lowest to the highest
Thine eye, eye of the storm,
To my side, overcome.

On the path into healing
Our journey toward Infinity
It’s nature’s way to, Eternity,
Life’s Myst’ry
Waves on the shoreline, Infinity...
Onward, the ocean... Life’s Mystery
Breathe and keep the world out
Breathe and bring the Word in
As high tide, brings low tide
As day light, emerges from the night
Dark’s embrace, born from light
Onward, the ocean... Infinity...
Waves on the shoreline, Eternity...
Onward, the ocean... Life’s Mystery

Based on sounds collected from 4 medicinal plants found in memory herbal formula
Lyrics by Mark Ryan
I can remember - I can remember well
What would you like to know?
I keep it all - just so
As of yet... I never forget
I can recall - most anything
And nothing gets lost - never erased
Stored in a safe place
Like where you left your hat? I can remember that!
Pathways in my brain - here on Memory Lane
I can remember - most ev’rything
What lines to sing
They're all where they belong - (the) words to ev'ry song!
Warm summer breeze - these intimate memories
And e-ve-ry drop of rain... nothing escapes - my brain!

HERBAL TEA INFUSION:

The following information is for educational purposes.

Please consider brewing herbal tea infusions utilizing the herbal plants formulas that inspired each of the musical tracks of this album.

You may find each of the 10 herbal formulas in the Tab called Herbal Formulas located at the bottom of the album webpage

Drinking a tea while listening to the music can create a synergistic effect that may enhance the potential benefits.

Recipe directions

The percentages listed are a recommendation, not a rule.

Bring water to a boil in a stainless steel or cast iron pot.

Add the plant material and turn the fire down low. Place a lid over the pot.

Let simmer for 3-5 minutes.

Pour into a mug while straining out the plant material

Turn on the music track that corresponds to the tea infusion that you have just created.

Find a comfortable place to rest and enjoy the experience without expectations.

Simply Breathe and BE

Remember, a sweetener of your choice can be added for taste and palpability.

Below you will find information about the potential value of combining the herbal tea infusion with the plant medicine music tracks.

Multisensory experiences—especially pairing sound and taste—do something pretty magical to the brain. They don’t just add pleasure; they change perception, emotion, and meaning

In essence

Sound opens the heart.

Taste brings us into the body.

Together, they create coherence—sensory, emotional, and relational.

1. Enhanced perception (the brain fills in more detail)

When sound and taste are experienced together, the brain integrates them into a single, richer event.

• Music can make flavors seem sweeter, more bitter, brighter, or deeper

• High-pitched, light sounds often enhance sweetness or freshness

• Lower, slower, resonant sounds tend to emphasize bitterness, umami, or earthiness

This is called crossmodal correspondence: the senses “talk” to each other, sharpening awareness rather than competing for attention.

Benefit: food and drink become more vivid without adding sugar, salt, or stimulation.

2. Deeper emotional resonance

Sound accesses emotion directly; taste grounds us in the body. Together, they create emotional coherence.

• Music sets an emotional landscape• Taste anchors that emotion somatically

• The experience becomes felt, not just observed

This pairing can evoke:

• Comfort and safety

• Nostalgia and memory

• Awe, ritual, or sacredness

Benefit: experiences feel meaningful, not just pleasant.

3. Improved mindfulness and presence

Multisensory experiences slow us down naturally.

• Attention becomes distributed rather than scattered

• People chew more slowly, breathe more deeply, listen more carefully

• The “default mode” (rumination, planning) quiets down

In therapeutic or contemplative settings, this is especially powerful.

Benefit: greater presence without effortful “trying to be mindful.”

4. Memory and learning amplification

Experiences involving multiple senses are encoded more strongly in memory.

• Taste is already tightly linked to memory (via the limbic system)

• Sound adds emotional and narrative structure

• Together they form durable, recallable impressions

This is why ceremonies, tastings, and rituals linger long after they end.

Benefit: lessons, insights, and emotional states are remembered—not just the

information.

5. Regulation of the nervous system

Certain sound–taste pairings can gently shift autonomic balance.

• Slow, harmonic music + warm or mildly sweet tastes → parasympathetic

activation (rest, digest)

• Rhythmic sound + crisp or sour tastes → alertness without stress

This has implications for:

• Anxiety reduction

• Digestive health

• Trauma-informed experiences

Benefit: regulation without medication or cognitive effort.

6. Social bonding and shared meaning

When people share multisensory experiences:

• They synchronize emotionally

• Conversation becomes more reflective and less performative

• There’s a subtle sense of “we experienced something together”

This is why communal meals with intentional sound feel different from eating with

background noise.

Benefit: connection and belonging.

7. Therapeutic and healing contexts

In integrative health, sound + taste can support:

• Pain modulation

• Emotional processing

• Recovery and resilience

• Cultural or ancestral reconnectionUsed skillfully, these experiences can be non-verbal medicine—working beneath language.
